Hi Rick, My name is William, A while back when I started to learn jazz, one teacher told me, the best way to learn jazz Improvising is to learn a bunch of two-five- one licks, he said 75 to 90% of jazz tunes are made up of two-five-ones. (Do you have a lesson on this topic,) can you tell me how to go about that.

    Thanks William email williejbarrow@bellsouth.net

Hi William, I did notice that Rick has a few lessons on 2-5-1, they’re under the ‘lessons index’ then ‘improvisation’ section. The two lessons that I found by taking a quick look (so there may be more) are ‘Building Bebop lines” and “Linear Development Studies”, hope this helps and welcome to the forum!

      David,

Thanks for chiming in. My recent health issues are slowing me down a bit. But the lessons on bebop lines and linear development definitely cover a lot of the aspects of playing on IIm7 V7 I progressions. In reality, when improvising, I pretty much hear the IIm7 V7 as a single entity, so it’s really about choosing colors and learning to resolve the V7 to the I.

These will also be of interest:

I do plan to make some more videos addressing this subject as soon as I’m able.

      Musically Yours,
      ~ Rick
